Mini motos 'becoming acute menace'
Mini motorbikes are fast becoming one of the most acute menaces on Britain's roads, critics have claimed.
The bikes which are motorbikes reduced to the size of a child's tricycle can carry riders at speeds of around 30 mph just inches above the ground.
Although the vehicles do not require bike insurance and are therefore not legal on public highways, this rule is frequently breached. Last year, Coventry City Council revealed that one in ten complaints concerning antisocial behaviour related to mini motos.
With sales of the vehicles rapidly increasing, the government is warning parents that the motors are not toys and can pose a serious threat to both pedestrians and other vehicles if they are driven illegally on public roads.
Some critics are going as far as calling for a licensing system to be imposed, in order to ensure that use of the bikes is properly monitored.
"It is a major issue that threatens to taint motorcyclists generally," Craig Carey-Clinch, spokesman for the Motor Cycle Industry Association, told the Guardian, adding: "But it needs some creative thinking not a big stick."
