EU warning over minimotos
The executive body of the European Union (EU) has urged member states to take action on the use of so-called mini-motos, claiming that they are dangerous and encourage more road accidents.
The miniature motorbikes are popular with teenagers, although they still require a license and full bike insurance if they are to be ridden on British roads.
According to the European Commission, the bikes fail to meet necessary safety standards and as such represent a serious danger to both their riders and other road-users or members of the public.
Commissioner for health and consumer protection Markos Kyprianou said: "The increasing numbers of inexpensive mini-motorbikes on the EU market is an extremely worrying development.
"These bikes are designed to appeal to youngsters through their small size and speed, but they are not toys and can kill."
He added that governments should work harder to ensure that dangerous machines were taken of the road in order to ensure public safety.
