Essex police bring back the motorbike
Police in Essex look set to reintroduce motorbikes to the force's patrol fleet, after the purchase of six new bikes was proposed earlier this week.
The principal aim of bringing back the motorcycles is to increase patrol of the county's road systems, reducing the number of motorcyclist fatalities, as well as assisting in policing crime hotspots.
Deployment of the highly visible policing resource is also anticipated to provide reassurance to the general public, supplying a rapid response to accident call-outs.
Essex police chief constable Roger Baker told the East Anglian Daily Times: "Motorcycles can be used for a whole range of policing services.
"They are a vital and proven tool in tackling crime and reducing the number of deaths on our roads."
The force axed its motorcycle unit in 1999 as part of a nationwide £7 million police force budget cut by former chief constable David Stevens.
A total of 77 accidents involving motorcycles on Essex roads over the past 12 months serves to highlight the vital importance of bike insurance.
