Electronic bike tagging wins support in Bermuda
Police and insurance companies in Bermuda have lent their support to the mandatory electronic tagging of all new bikes.
From September 1, owners of all brand-new bicycles and motorbikes will be required to tag their bikes using Datatag equipment.
Costing a mandatory extra US $150 on top of the price of the bike, Datatag hides tiny microchips all over the bike to transmit electronic fingerprints, in the form of unique numbers, to the tag receptors.
According to Bermuda police commissioner Johnathan Smith, $12 million worth of cycles have been stolen since 2002.
Commissioner Smith told the Royal Gazette: "In 2002, 57.3 out of every 1,000 registered cycles were reported stolen.
"This was reduced to 43.6 cycles out of every 1,000 registered cycles in 2003 and to 33.9 per 1,000 in 2004."
According to Eugene Bothelo, president of Datatag Bermuda, the theft rate among the 500,000 motorcycles in the UK currently protected by Datatag has fallen to less than ten per cent of the previous rate meaning premiums on bike insurance may fall.
