Danger of motorbikes underlined

Fri, 05 Aug 2005

Motorcyclists are six times more likely to be involved in fatal road accidents than any other drivers in the Republic of Ireland, according to reports.

This is the motive behind the National Safety Council’s latest initiative to promote bike safety, with comprehensive bike insurance also identified as a key issue by some experts.

According to U TV, the council will be launching a new advertising campaign in order to shock bikers and other drivers alike into improving their road safety.

Apparently, motorcyclists make up only two per cent of road traffic in Ireland, yet suffer 12 per cent of road deaths.

Results have also revealed that a shocking seven out of ten bikers nave never received basic lessons, which has lead the National Safety Council chairman to urge the government to introduce compulsory basic training.

The Republic of Ireland actually has one of the highest motorbike fatality rates in Europe.

A recent AA report has also suggested that significant safety improvements on British roads are continually undermined by what they call ‘mini massacres’ of motorcyclists on some rural roads.
