Cannabis doubles risk of accident

Fri, 02 Dec 2005

Smoking cannabis before driving almost doubles the risk of being involved in a fatal accident, new research has found.

Although cannabis was previously known to dull senses necessary for driving, this is the first study of its kind to prove that the drug is a significant cause of crashes.

The France-based study of around 11,000 drivers found that the drug produced a less dangerous affect than drink-driving however.

A total of 681 drivers involved in fatal accidents tested positive to cannabis, while 2,096 were found to have alcohol in their systems, with men and motorcycle drivers the most likely to drive under the influence of drink or drugs, thus highlighting the need for adequate bike insurance.

Senior researcher, Dr Bernard Laumon, from the French National Institute for Transport and Safety Research confirmed: "The risk of responsibility for fatal traffic crashes while driving under the influence of cannabis has a significant dose effect that shows a causal relation between cannabis and crashes."

The research, carried out by the French National Institute for Transport and Safety Research, was published by the British Medical Journal on their website.
