Born again bikers targeted

Wed, 17 May 2006

So-called born again bikers are facing a clampdown from police in Scotland, concerned at the number of fatal crashes involving high-powered, expensive motorcycles that occur on the back roads north of the border.

According to the Scotsman, police will patrol back roads in an effort to catch speeding motorcycle riders who are riding dangerously and over the speed limit.

In the Lothian region alone, an incredible 1,281 motorcycle accidents have been recorded in the last five years, resulting 315 serious injuries and 29 deaths.

Not only do these accidents cost lives, they also drive up the price of bike insurance even for competent, experienced riders.

The problem is largely due to middle-aged motorcycle riders who buy expensive and powerful motorcycles having been used to bikes with far less powerful engines in their youth.

These bikes are inevitably more difficult to control, particularly around the tight bends of winding country roads where bikers enjoy riding.

The move by Scottish police follows a government ad campaign, urging motorcyclists to be more aware of the dangers of the road.
