BMW launches apprenticeship scheme
Wed, 23 Nov 2005
BMW Motorrad UK is launching its first motorcycle apprenticeship scheme, in partnership with Hull College.
Based at the college's new £4.7 million Motor Vehicle Centre, which opened last week, the college is the first educational establishment in the UK to offer the scheme.
BMW Motorrad will provide a range of motorcycles as well as state-of-the-art computer testing equipment so that students across the UK can obtain a BMW technician qualification.
BMW Motorrad aftersales manager, Dave Alexander, stressed that the scheme would supply a "new breed" of skilled motorcycle technicians, who would go on to play a crucial role in the motorcycle industry.
"The distinctive technical make-up evident in so many BMW models does make it increasingly difficult to employ technicians from other market segments who simply do not have the level of BMW technical knowledge demanded across our dealer network," he said.
The initiation of the apprenticeship scheme highlights the importance of specially trained mechanics for specific vehicle types. Taking a motorbike to a 'cowboy' mechanic could lead to damage being sustained to the vehicle, resulting in bike insurance claims.
