Bikers welcome skid-resistant manhole covers
Thu, 25 May 2006
The number of claims being made on bike insurance policies in Bristol may take a tumble this month, as Bristol city council trial a new type of manhole cover designed to prevent motorcycles from skidding on them round tight corners.
The new covers are made with a special skid-resistant material, designed to maintain the traction of motorcycles, even under heavy breaking, and will be installed in Bristol as part of a new road system.
Commenting on the trials of the new manholes, the council's executive member for transport, Dennis Brown said that motorcycling groups had been asking for the introduction of skid-resistant covers for some time, amid concerns over the danger they pose to motorcyclists.
"We have endeavored to design the roads to avoid positioning covers on bends where heavy braking is likely," he said.
"However with a multitude of utilities on the highway, this is not always possible. This new type of cover should make the road much safer for two wheeled traffic."
If successful, the new manhole covers could be making an appearance on roads across the UK, making motorcycle riding a much safer past-time.
