Bikers object to noise restrictions

Mon, 19 Dec 2005

A number of cities in the US are cracking down on what is deemed as an 'excessive' level of noise created by motorbikes in the area.

With motorcycle ownership increasing by more than 34 per cent in the States since 1998, bike insurance has not been the only thing on riders' minds this year, as concerns mount over bike noise becoming a source of tension between riders and residents.

Objections to bans from bikers in locations such as Laguna Beach in California and the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood seem to have fallen on deaf ears however.

Residents have called for police patrols and decibel meters to force bikers to ride more quietly, the Los Angles Times reported, while some communities are even considering scrapping motorcycle rallies in their areas.

While the motor industry is taking a concerned notice of the complaints, bikers are keen to uphold their rights to ride in their locations of choice. For many, the distinctively gravelly sound of a motorcycle's engine is also a large part of the bike's appeal.

"This is an issue which could affect our right to ride," said Tom Lindsay, spokesman for the American Motorcycle Association (AMA).

In May of this year, AMA held its second 'noise summit' in Columbus, Ohio, to tackle an issue which it claimed represents the most 'pointed threat to bikers' rights'.
