Bikers banned from Lake District routes
New laws have been introduced in Cumbria this month, banning motorcyclists from a number of routes around the Lake District national park.
The 'green road' changes, introduced by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), will affect some 31 routes around the national park, and will prevent both motorcycles and 4x4 vehicles from sharing the country paths with walkers, cyclists and horse riders.
The changes come as a result of concern over the impact that using motorbikes and cars for off-roading has on the landscape and environment, with soil erosion becoming an increasing problem.
However, national park officials have stressed that there are still many routes in the Lake District that will remain open to motorcycles and cars for off-roading, an activity that the local tourism industry is coming to rely on more and more.
Off-roading as a recreational activity has grown in popularity over recent years, with off-road motorbikes becoming an increasingly common purchase.
However, extra care needs to be taken when riding off-road, with suitable protective clothing required and adequate bike insurance a must to insure against injury or damage to the bike.
