Biker casualty figures rise

Motorcyclists are disproportionately represented in the UK's casualty statistics, a new investigation has revealed.

Although biker casualty figures have dropped since 2003, they still account for 17 per cent of fatalities despite representing just one per cent of road users.

In 2004, 585 bikers were killed on the UK's roads and 6,063 seriously injured, highlighting the need for adequate bike insurance.

The most recent figures have also shown that 73 per cent of all crashes involving a bike also involve a car, with the most common cause a right of way violation.

Data configured from police records shows that in around 65 per cent of such incidents, it is the motorist, rather than the biker, who is at fault.

In response to the problem, a new campaign by the Department for Transport has been launched to encourage drivers in urban environments to take longer to look around them for bikes, particularly in their blind spots.
