Bermuda authorities consider car ban
Mon, 15 Aug 2005
Bike insurance in Bermuda could soon be more popular, as the government of the tiny island is reportedly considering the introduction of a ban on car ownership.
Officials claim that the island is being overwhelmed by cars and the limited road network is struggling to cope, resulting in bad congestion.
Proposals being considered by ministers include banning single people, married couples without children and short-stay expatriates from owning cars and outlawing sales of secondhand vehicles, according to press reports.
Car-pooling, bus and ferry use, and improving bus services for schoolchildren are all being heavily promoted after figures showed that an extra 10,000 new cars are now on the roads, compared with five years ago.
A ban on secondhand car sales on the island was rescinded eleven years ago, but the government is now considering its reintroduction.
The Bermudan Ministry of Transport said that it is "of the opinion that, while controversial, establishing a maximum number limit on the number of motor cars is inevitable if current car ownership trends continue".
