If you see an accident

If you witness an accident and someone is injured, you could make a big difference to the outcome. Firstly don't cause any more accidents, turn on your hazard lights, and do not cross any carriageways. Do not light any cigarettes in case there are any petrol spillages, and make sure that there are no HAZCHEM symbols.

With the other witnesses, make sure that someone phones the ambulance straight away and those with first aid skills help the casualties. When talking to the 999 control centre they will need to know exactly where the accident happened, the number and seriousness of the casualties, if any hazards are involved and if anyone is trapped.

It is vital to act swiftly if the casualty is seriously injured. Bear in mind that if someone is screaming they might well be less serious state than someone moaning or silent. When dealing with any casualty you need to remember the ABC- Airways, Breathing and Circulation. Stop any bleeding by putting pressure on the wound and elevating the injured part, where possible. If there are any broken bones, don't move the person until help arrives, but use a blanket or pillow to support the injury. If there is a burn pour cold water over it for at least 20 minutes, or until the pain has gone. And don't forget to keep the casualty warm, especially if they are in shock.

IMPORTANT NOTE - If you do not have first aid skills then do not attempt to help an injured person, you could do more harm than good.
