Safe Driving in the Winter

Getting your car ready for winter is mostly common sense. Winter is colder and wetter, and the weather conditions are more changeable. By planning ahead, you can make your winter driving safer and your car more reliable.

As with any time you use your car, planning your trip is important. You should check the oil, water, and tyres. Checking the pressure and tread of your tyres is sensible, not only for legal reasons but the greater the tread the more efficient the tyre is at clearing water from it's path, making your driving safer. You could even get a winter service from your garage before the cold weather sets in to make doubly sure.

Good visibility is vital for safe driving, so check that all your wiper blades are not too worn or split, and that your windscreen washer has antifreeze in it. Also make sure that your windscreen is completely clear every time you start driving.

Make sure the all your lights are working and correctly adjusted, especially as you may not have used them much over the summer. Check the exterior glass of your lights, as it is a legal requirement that they are undamaged. Also make sure that you have put antifreeze in the radiator and the battery electrolyte is topped up. Having a scrapper and de-icer handy, and carrying a blanket in the car is useful too.

Brushing up on your driving knowledge especially thinking about snow or blizzard conditions is a good idea so that you can feel safer.
