Safe Driving in the Summer

As the sun comes out as well as applying your sunscreen, you should check your car because as the temperatures rise, this will affect your car and your journeys. Here's a few reminders from Express Insurance for safe summer driving.

The heat affects your car in a few ways. The ambient temperature is higher, so there is more chance of the car overheating, especially if it is an older car, or irregularly serviced. So check the level of water in the radiator and washer, and the oil, especially in the electric fan. Also be aware not to fill the fuel tank too high, as at higher temperatures the fuel expands.

To cool the inside temperature down you will use your air conditioning more, so check that it is set correctly. Also make sure that you carry drinking water and food, especially when setting off on a longer journey, where you are more likely to get stuck in traffic. It's worth planning your journey carefully, and listening to the radio so that you avoid getting stuck in long queues.

Be careful not to overload your car beyond its designed carrying capacity. The heavier the car the longer the braking distance is, so alter your driving to allow for this. If you plan to travel with a caravan, or trailer, make sure it is properly maintained and loaded safely.
