Van registrations fall in March

8th April 2009

Latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers (SMMT) have revealed a drop in van registrations, cheap van insurance customers may be interested to learn.

Total new van registrations have slumped 42.8 per cent for March, down 26.9 per cent to 248,658 for the rolling year.

Registrations of trucks have also suffered - figures reveal a drop of 37.0 per cent in March, down 6.0 per cent to 51,971 for the rolling year.

Commenting on the figures Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive, said: "UK demand for vans and trucks remains low.

"It will take time before the Chancellor's financial stimulus policies work, so we need the government to do more to stabilise markets and give firms and households the confidence to buy."

The SMMT has been part of calls for the introduction of a scrappage scheme, which would give a £2,000 incentive for motorists to scrap their old vehicles in favour of a new one.

A survey from the SMMT revealed that 76 per cent of consumers are in favour of such a move.
