Van insurance customers 'turning away from new vehicles'
23rd March 2009
Industry figures suggest that van drivers are shunning new vehicles.
The latest statistics on vehicle production from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show a slump in commercial vehicle production.
A total of 5,870 vehicles were produced in February 2009, a year-on-year drop of 71.6 per cent.
In the year to date, 14,221 commercial vehicles have been made, a drop of 65.7 compared with the previous year.
This suggests that those looking for a cheap van insurance quote may be favouring used vehicles over new.
Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive, appealed for government support for the automotive industry.
He said: "The large fall in February's vehicle production is a direct result of weak demand and the need to protect the highly-skilled workforce and valuable industrial capability in the UK automotive sector."
The Society of Motor Auctions has reported 'unprecedented' auction activity, with used car demand up around 20 per cent in January alone.
