Soaring costs of fuel 'make electric vans more appealing'
25th June 2008
A new report has shown that the rising cost of fuel has pushed up the annual cost of driving a van by more than £1,000.
The calculations from Modec highlighted the rising costs of driving light commercial vehicles in the UK and showed how important it is for firms to find cheap van insurance.
In fact, Modec claimed that it is now £1,109 more expensive for someone to drive 15,000 miles in a van than it was a year ago.
To combat the rising costs, the firm urged commercial drivers to consider its range of zero emission vehicles. It explained that the electricity used in the vans works out at just 7p per mile, compared to 29p for an equivalent diesel vehicle.
The company's spokesperson, Trevor Power, explained: "Despite often being viewed as a solution for the future, electric vehicles are an economically viable reality and in use within commercial fleets today.
"During the six years of research and development invested in the Modec vehicle, we made significant advances in the technologies used and have created a commercial vehicle that offers a serious alternative to the diesel fleet.
"Needless to say, these vehicles will not be affected by the fuel strikes disrupting the UK."
