Watch out for potholes, motorcycle insurances customers told

9th April 2009

Cheap motorcycle customers must be wary of the dangers of potholes in the road, a safety group has suggested.

With many bikers gearing up for a leisurely drive over the Easter weekend, Tyresafe is advising motorcyclists to keep a close eye on road conditions.

In particular, the safety group says to watch out for the freeze and thaw effect, which can accelerate poor quality road conditions.

TyreSafe chairman, Stuart Jackson says that motorcyclists must be extra vigilant given that their contact surface is far smaller than in a car.

He explained: "Bikers rely more on the condition of the roads than car drivers, as any uneven surfaces can be felt directly by the rider.

"A deflection caused by a pothole could easily result in the biker losing control."

Campaign website Potholes.co.uk estimates that potholes cost motorists £1 million a day with repairs from axle and suspension failures costing an average of £240.
