New helmet ratings for motorcycle insurance holders

16th April 2009

New safety ratings for motorcycle helmets have been published by the government, in news of relevance to UK motorcycle insurance holders.

The details of the guidelines were announced by the road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick.

An additional 28 motorcycle helmets have been graded by Sharp, the Department for Transport's Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme, taking the total number of ratings to 128.

Every manufacturer's motorcycle helmet must pass statutory safety guidelines, but the Sharp initiative give riders more information on what products afford the most protection.

Sharp guidelines award ratings of between one and five stars and show that the safety offered between some helmets could vary by as much as 70 per cent.

Jim Fitzpatrick commented: "If all riders wore the safest helmets available, 50 lives could be saved each year, so I am delighted to announce these new Sharp ratings."

Safety organisation Tyresafe has recently warned motorcyclists of the risks of potholes, which could be even more hazardous following one of the harshest winters on record.
