Honda marks 50 years of racing with commemorative coin

28th May 2009

Motorcycle insurance customers have learned that a special 50 pence coin is due to be circulated to mark Honda's 50th anniversary of racing.

The first coin has been struck by Honda road racer and 14-times TT champion John McGuinness at the Isle of Man's Pobjoy Mint.

It depicts the Honda star on a CBR1000RR Fireblade, commemorating his record-breaking lap in 2007, above the dates 1959-2009 to signify Honda's racing history.

"Only a few people, including the Queen, have had the experience of striking the first of a new circulatory coin so I feel quite privileged and thank Honda (UK), the Isle of Man Treasury and Pobjoy for inviting me to do this," commented McGuinness.

The 2009 TT campaign will also be commemorated with a unique set of stamps, the release of previously unpublished photos from 1959 and an official anniversary book.

Due to kick off at the end of May, the TT event has attracted motorsport luminaries including MotoGP winner Bradley Smith and commentating legend Murray Walker.ADNFCR-1602-ID-19190455-ADNFCR
