Brit takes top spot in 125cc championship

2nd June 2009

Motorcycle insurance customers saw one of Britain's top motorsport riders take his second win of the season in Italy at the weekend.

Bradley Smith pulled off an incredible finish in the FIM 125cc World Championship at Mugello, fending off a late challenge from Spaniard Nicolas Tirol to finish in first place, just 0.216 seconds ahead.

It leaves the 18-year-old Briton at the top of the championship points standings after he stole the lead from teammate Julian Simon, who ended the race in third place.

Meanwhile, fourth place was awarded to Pol Esparago, with Red Bull KTM's Marc Marquez close behind in fifth, following a last lap crash by Sandro Cortese.

A technical fault forced Italian home favourite Andrea Iannone out of the race on his sixth lap, to the disappointment of the Mugello spectators.

The next round of MotoGP is scheduled to take place in Spain's Catalunya on June 14th.ADNFCR-1602-ID-19198154-ADNFCR
