Brake's campaign for safer, greener driving gets government backing
13th February 2009
Britain's road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick has given his backing to a campaign that aims to help businesses run cheaper, safer and more fuel-efficient motoring strategies.
Companies which have motorbike, van, or car fleets will be able to benefit from Brake's free campaign pack that aims to give managers guidance on the issue.
Mr Fitzpatrick, who was talking at Brake's Fleet Safety Forum conference on Wednesday (February 11th), said that there was a link between "sustainable travel and safety".
He explained: "Journeys transferred to more sustainable modes have a far lower chance of experiencing crashes.
"Where it is necessary to drive, smarter driving techniques can not only help to reduce emissions, but also improve safety."
Businesses can also cut costs by employing safer, greener driving techniques for their employees. Mr Fitzpatrick went on to explain that driving techniques can have an influence on a company's "bottom line".
Companies that choose to swap cars for motorcycles can also cut costs on motorbike insurance and parking bills.
Steve Martindale, general manager of Honda (UK) Motorcycles, recently described motorcycling as an "extremely viable, practical and economical means of transport".
