Bikers told to check tyres after winter
12th March 2009
Motorcyclists concerned about road safety should ensure they check the tyres on their bikes before embarking on a journey.
That is the advice being issued by TyreSafe, which has directed the guidance specifically at those who are planning to enjoy race events or "the first ride of the spring".
TyreSafe has said those attending events such as the Man TT race, which attracts some 30,000 bikers each year, should ensure their tyres have enough tread depth.
By doing so, it explained, bikers can both ensure their safety and improve their vehicle's handling.
Stuart Jackson, chairman, TyreSafe, said: "Throughout April TyreSafe is holding Bike Tyre Safety Month, with many garages and tyre dealers around the country offering free tyre checks to bikers.
The company has issued some guidelines to bikers, which include ensuring tyres are checked for "tears, cracks or bulges". It has also suggested riders use detergent to remove grease and oil from their tyres.
Driving safely could help to cut bike insurance costs as drivers are less likely to make a claim.
Motorcyclists are advised by TyreSafe to check their air pressure at least once a month and before embarking on a long journey.
