Scientists work on 'self-braking' sat-nav system

9th March 2009

Drivers may soon not have to worry about traffic lights as scientists work on a car fitted with the next-generation of sat-nav systems.

Under a new government-funded project, scientists are working on developing cars with the technological capacity to know when lights are going to change red and start braking accordingly.

In addition, the Sentience system will also be capable of anticipating congestion and speed bumps, with researchers confident that the system will allow drivers to benefit from lower fuel bills and even cheaper car insurance policies as accident rates on UK roads decline.

The team behind the new technology have stressed that drivers will be able to override the system, for example if a pedestrian steps out into the road, the Times reports.

It is anticipated that Sentience will be made available in new cars from 2012, the report added, with the system set to be particularly popular with motorists looking to improve fuel-efficiency levels.

Over recent weeks, however, drivers have been warned against becoming too reliant on sat-nav systems, with a number of motoring mishaps having been blamed on the technology.ADNFCR-1602-ID-19064870-ADNFCR
