Reverse parking can save £100 a year

25th July 2008

Reversing your car into a parking space can save you £100 annually on fuel bills, a new report has shown.

New data from the IAM Motoring Trust reveals that reversing out of a space when a car's engine is cold uses around 20 to 25 times more petrol in the first few seconds than it does when it is warm.

If a car insurance customer does this ten to 12 times a week, it will add up to a cost of around £100 a year.

According to the IAM, reverse parking is safer and is advised in the Highway Code, while reversing close to a wall also, from a security point of view, makes it more difficult for thieves to gain access.

The personal finance site fool.co.uk recently advised motorists struggling to pay rising fuel costs to convert their car to run on Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG), which typically costs half the price of standard petrol.ADNFCR-1602-ID-18702568-ADNFCR
