Parents put kids in car seats at risk

23rd June 2009

A significant number of parents are unclear about how to ensure their children are safe in their car seats, according to a new survey.

The study by Which? for Child Safety Week shows more than one in three underestimated the age or height when their children have to travel in a car seat, potentially putting their car insurance policy at risk of being invalid.

Just four in ten parents knew their child had to be in a car seat if they were less than 4ft 5ins or under 12 years old.

The study also found 53 per cent of parents do not trust retailers to give them good advice when fitting the car seats.

Richard Headland, editor of Which? Car, pointed out that children need to be in a car seat until they are taller than 135cm or reach their 12th birthday.

"Kids are at risk if they're not properly secured in a seat appropriate to their weight and height," he commented.

This week Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson joined a car safety campaign after his grandson Charlie, ten,was seriously injured in a car accident.
