One in five 'breaking car insurance laws'
18th March 2009
Around a fifth of motorists admit to breaking car insurance laws by driving without proper cover, findings reveal.
Figures from moneysupermarket.com show that nine per cent of motorists have driven their own car without cover.
A further eight per cent said that they got behind the wheel of another's vehicle without full insurance.
The young are some of the most likely to offend with 42 per cent of twenty-somethings admitted to hitting the road without a correct policy, compared to seven per cent of those in their sixties.
Drivers risk missing out on cheap car insurance by being convicted after taking to the road without full cover.
Steve Sweeney, head of motor insurance at moneysupermarket.com said it is a "shame" that so many motorists were taking to the road uninsured.
"In 2008 we found 15 per cent of motorist admitting to the offence so 2009 has seen an unfortunate increase," he added.
Moneysupermarket has also warned that drivers caught speeding could also face higher car insurance costs, with just one conviction raising premiums on average by almost ten per cent.
