Oil checks 'help motorists avoid car insurance claims'
30th June 2009
National Oil Check Week has been hailed a success and may have helped several motorists avoid having to claim on their car insurance policies.
Launched by Comma, the initiative called on drivers to check under their bonnets more often.
Figures show that five million drivers risk an average repair bill of £1,413 by failing to do the quick and easy dipstick test of oil levels.
A roadshow across the country as part of National Oil Check Week revealed that almost half of drivers are running low on oil.
One in seven are driving with dangerously low oil levels, putting their vehicles at risk of breakdown.
"Most people we spoke to were surprised to discover that their cars needed such regular attention and I'm certain we saved at least a few people having to shell out for a new engine," said Comma sales and marketing director Mike Bewsey.
Demonstrating that they know how to check oil levels is one of the things learner drivers can be asked to do on their practical test.
