New research into fuel saving technology
13th August 2008
A leading car manufacturer has announced it is developing an engine designed to maximise miles out of both petrol and alcohol.
Lotus Engineering has teamed up with Queen's University Belfast and Jaguar to develop the engine which will not only be environmentally friendly, but also economical.
The project, entitled Omnivore, is one of many environmental vehicle schemes, which aim to cut drivers' fuel costs, and perhaps in the future reduce car insurance premiums.
Mike Kimberly, chief executive officer of Group Lotus, said: "Taking full advantage of the benefits of sustainable bio alcohols will ensure a greater percentage of vehicle miles will be travelled using renewable fuels."
The company sees the development of the engine as a key point in the timeline between today's fuels and the light, sustainable energy sources of the future.
Also today, the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) announced a delay in the decision on legislation regarding driving tests taken in heavy vehicles to September 30th, 2013.
