Motorists reminded to key-p safe

30th June 2009

Drivers need to take as much care with their car keys as they do when protecting other valuable possessions, it is advised.

More than half of all UK car owners are more concerned about locking away their laptops, with nearly all giving no thought to hiding their keys away, figures from Vauxhall show.

Despite the fact that more than ten thousand vehicles were stolen from UK driveways last year following thefts of car keys from homes, 75 per cent of motorists do not bother to leave their keys in a secure place.

Worryingly, one in ten leave them right by the front door, while a third keep keys in the kitchen.

Following the research, Vauxhall has teamed up with Bedfordshire Police to launch the Key Safe initiative and encourage drivers to protect their vehicles.

"It's easy to forget that a car key is a valuable possession that needs to be kept safe," commented Simon Ewart, a spokesperson for Vauxhall.

According to the latest Car Theft Index from the Home Office, cars between 12 and 14 years old face the highest risk of being stolen.
