Britain 6th in road safety league
22nd June 2009
Britain is the sixth safest country in the world in terms of the number of annual road crashes, according to a new table.
The UK ranked sixth in the new report from the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), suggesting British motorists could be making fewer car insurance claims than Malta, the Netherlands and Norway.
Neil Greig, director of policy and research at the institute, said the government has been working to make Britain's roads safer and aims to reduce casualties significantly by 2020.
He said: "Compared with the top five safest countries, we have a much denser road network, used by a disproportionately high number of cars."
Mr Greig said the government must provide a safer, modern road network but that it was also down to motorists to take responsibility for their safety.
IAM said it is now far less likely to be injured in a car accident today than in the 1980s, but rates had not changed for young driver injuries or fatalities.
The study also revealed Britain's roads have grown by an estimated 80,000 kilometres in the past 50 years, but more than 95 per cent of these are minor roads.
Meanwhile traffic has increased ten-fold since 1950.
