3m Brits risk tyre problems

1st August 2008

Three million UK car insurance customers could be risking tyre problems this summer by not checking them regularly enough, according to the RAC foundation.

The Foundation has launched an eight week tyre safety campaign urging drivers of low-mileage vehicles to get their tyres inspected, after new research by the group discovered that ten per cent motorist do not understand the link between tyre age and road safety.

Experts agree that older tyres are at risk of fatigue, deterioration and potential failure, which is why the campaign is advising car insurance customers to take advantage of free tyre inspections at more than 2,700 National Tyre Distributors Association centres.

Sheila Rainger, deputy director for the RAC Foundation, said: "Modern tyres are very robust and failure-resistant, but older tyres that have been stored incorrectly or simply not used for many years can become unfit for purpose through the passage of time alone."

Earlier this week, Automotive Technician Accreditation (ATA) highlighted that 52 per cent of vehicle owners did not know when their next service was due. ADNFCR-1602-ID-18712839-ADNFCR
