Whiplash being tackled by ABI and government

A whiplash epidemic is sweeping the nation, according to the Association of British Insurers (ABI) and the government has issued proposals to help reduce the problem.

Research by the ABI has revealed that 1,200 people claim for whiplash every day following a collision and that figure has increased by a quarter over the last five years.

Motorists tailgating the car in front and incorrectly adjusted head restraints are just some of the reasons for the rise, the ABI reports.

Stephen Haddrill, the ABI’s Director General, explained that there needs to be a collective effort to help reduce the number of incidents.

Mr Haddrill said: "We call on the government, road safety groups, the medical and legal professions and other stakeholders to work with us on a campaign to reduce this problem."

The government has proposed a new framework that aims to show learner drivers the importance of keeping a safe distance from the car in front.

It also suggested that vehicle retailers should demonstrate how to adjust head restraints so that they are in the correct position when they sell vehicles.

Motorists should take the time to ensure they have the correct low cost car insurance should an accident occur.
