Tyre pressure 'has a massive impact on fuel efficiency'
11th June 2008
Drivers hoping to reduce emissions from their cars need to keep their vehicle well maintained and drive in a sensible manner, an industry expert has said.
Jay Nagley, publisher of Clean Green Cars, explained that all car insurance customers could easily reduce emissions by taking care of their car and driving in the most fuel-efficient manner possible.
He said that keeping a car's tyres correctly inflated was vital. Mr Nagley explained: "A lot of people don't do this and that makes quite a big difference to fuel economy."
Similarly, keeping tyres correctly inflated could reduce a driver's chance of accident and therefore keep future car insurance premiums down.
Mr Nagley added: "The most important thing is how you drive it: not to accelerate too hard, not to break too suddenly - to drive smoothly."
In conclusion, Mr Nagley said that rising oil prices would "indirectly" encourage motorists to switch to greener cars.
"More environmentally-friendly cars use less fuel. It's not that people are getting greener as such, it's that people are trying to save money," he added.
