Over 75% of car owners interested in going green
10th June 2008
More than three quarters of British motorists would be willing to switch to a greener vehicle, new research has revealed.
A survey by motoring website Newcarnet asked car insurance customers how willing they would be to switch from petrol and diesel to more environmentally-friendly options.
Drivers in the south west of England were the most willing to look at an alternative fuel option, with 84.6 per cent agreeing.
Those in the North East were the least keen to switch 43 per cent said that they would not consider alternative fuels.
Cost and choice were some of the factors putting drivers off going green despite car insurance companies offering incentives.
Newcarnet's Massimo Pini said people were willing to change if the options were available.
"But all government seem to be doing is increasing costs without promoting alternatives. People need to know the real financial benefits and feel confident that alternative fuels are widely available if they're going to switch from petrol and diesel" he explained.
Department for Transport 2007 figures state that one in every 140 new cars bought in the UK last year gets power from biofuel, hybrid technology or electric alone.
