New deal keeps disqualified drivers off UK and Irish roads

27th June 2008

A deal between the governments of the UK and Ireland could make roads safer and help people keep their car insurance premiums down.

Under the landmark agreement, UK drivers who are disqualified for an offence in Ireland will no longer be able to avoid punishment when they return to England.

Similarly, Irish drivers disqualified in the UK will find their ban follows them back to the Emerald Isle.

Jim Fitzpatrick, the British road safety minister, said that it seemed like common sense that people convicted of things like dangerous driving should find the ban still applies when they get home.

"This pioneering agreement will make our roads safer by ensuring disqualified drivers are not able to escape their punishment and so keep dangerous drivers off our roads," he added.

Noel Dempsey, the Irish minister for transport, added: "This deal on the mutual recognition of disqualified drivers across all three jurisdictions is good news for road users.

"All three governments are working hard to save lives on our roads and this deal will be a very welcome addition to that work.

"Now disqualified drivers will be kept off the roads in Ireland and the UK and that makes real road safety sense. I look forward to continuing cooperation of this kind with my colleagues in the UK."ADNFCR-1602-ID-18659901-ADNFCR
