Leeds police use kids to slow drivers down
3rd July 2008
Youngsters from Leeds have been invited to help local police officers try to make the roads in the city safer.
Following two traffic collisions close to Hovingham Primary School, police decided action was needed to encourage drivers to slow down and reduce their risk of suffering a crash and higher future car insurance premiums.
To this end, pupils from the school will work with officers tomorrow (July 4th) to alert motorists that they are driving too fast.
The teams will be using Speed Indicator Devices (SID) to instantly show drivers if they are travelling too fast.
Inspector Nik Adams of the Gipton and Harehills neighbourhood policing team commented: "We hope to raise the awareness of road users and the community of the importance of driving carefully and within the speed limits.
"Hopefully the children will enjoy the day and remember it and put into practice what they have learnt."
Recently, the Chester Chronicle reported that police in the area were targeting dangerous drivers in a bid to improve road safety in the area.
