Drivers urged to take care as summer holidays approach

15th July 2008

Drivers in Wigan this weekend have been advised to take extra special care on the roads if they want to avoid accidents and higher future car insurance premiums.

The local Wigan Evening Post reported that the summer term is set to end for school children in the area on Friday (July 18th), meaning that road users need to be particularly vigilant.

Julie Dagnall, the council's road safety manager, explained to the paper that it was important drivers were aware of events that could make the roads more hazardous.

"Children will be finishing school on Friday and with the long holiday ahead filling their minds, road safety may not be their main concern," she said.

"Drivers can help by take special care on the roads and slowing down."

In fact, Ms Dagnall said that car insurance customers needed to remain careful for the whole of the summer holiday period, as children were more likely to play outside without adult supervision.

"If we all take our road safety responsibilities seriously, then hopefully we will see a reduction in all aspects of road casualties, not just during the summer months but throughout the year," she concluded.
