Drivers 'are not check tyre pressure'

17th June 2008

Drivers in the UK are risking higher car insurance premiums and greater fuel costs by not regularly checking their tyres, a new report has warned.

Cooper Tire Europe found that around 95 per cent of all vehicles on UK roads have at least one tyre under-inflated by ten per cent.

Not only does having under-inflated tyres reduce fuel efficiency, but it also increases the risk of accident and the need to make a claim on car insurance policies.

The report cited government data which suggested that defective and under-inflated tyres cause 1,000 serious injuries or fatalities every year.

Cooper Tire product manager Malcolm Jones explained: "Checking your tyre pressures is a mundane, but very simple, task.

"As the credit crunch grips the country, it's amazing that drivers aren't bothering to do it, as it could save them money and, more importantly, keep them safe on the road."

Jay Nagley, publisher of Clean Green Cars, recently stressed the importance of regularly checking a car's tyres.

He explained that many drivers still ignored the health of their wheels and said that well maintained tyres make "quite a big difference to fuel economy".ADNFCR-1602-ID-18642865-ADNFCR
