Vauxhall announces new green car plans
6th March 2009
Vauxhall has become the latest carmaker to unveil plans for an electric car.
Joining the likes of Honda and Toyota, the firm has revealed that it plans to launch its electric Ampera model in the UK market in 2012, spelling good news for motorists keen to benefit from more affordable car insurance and overall running costs.
Announcing the plans at the Geneva Motor Show, Vauxhall explained that the new car will be aimed largely at the eco-conscious family market, with the electric motor to be constructed so as to be able to be charged from any household 240V outlet.
Speaking at the major industry event, Carl-Peter Forster, European president of General Motors, said: "Its ground-breaking Voltec electric propulsion system is the kind of game-changing technology the automotive industry needs to respond to energy and environmental challenges."
The company has already revealed that the Ampera will travel journeys of fewer than 40 miles on battery power alone, with an on-board generator capable of extending its range by as much as 300 miles to power longer trips.
