UK congestion falls

26th August 2008

Congestion on UK roads was down by 12 per cent in the first six months of 2008, as high fuel prices and the economic slowdown took their toll on motorists.

The Trafficmaster Journey Time Index reveals that the average speed on Britain's motorways slowed down from 63.6 mph to 62.2 mph over the last year, as drivers aimed to conserve fuel.

However, even though motorists have slowed down, journey times have decreased by 0.3 per cent as a result of the clearer roads - which could have a slight impact on cheap car insurance quotes.

Georgina Read at Trafficmaster said: "Average motorway speeds have reduced, as has congestion - this indicates a reduction in the volume of vehicles, especially HGV's, travelling on the roads.

"One obvious explanation for this is that rising fuel prices and general economic concerns are making people think carefully about how they drive."

The route with the most dramatic decrease in congestion occurred on the M25 Northern sector between junctions 21 and 31, with a 26 per cent reduction in traffic jams over the 12 month period.ADNFCR-1602-ID-18748399-ADNFCR
