Motorists now want cheaper cars, industry figure reveals
5th March 2009
Motorists across the globe are turning to cheaper cars as their finances become tighter in the wake of the economic downturn, one leading industry figure has confirmed.
Speaking at this week's Geneva Car Show, Ken Keir, Honda's European vice president, explained that drivers are looking to cut costs in all areas, whether this be seeking out more fuel-efficient vehicles or turning to cheaper car insurance.
"Customers are downsizing and buying smaller cars," he told the Telegraph.
"They are doing it for economic reasons, performance reasons, because they want to spend less on fuel and emit less CO2."
These comments come as Honda aims to take advantage of such a shift in consumer trends with the recent launch of its Insight model.
Cited by some as a direct competitor to Toyota's Prius hybrid, the new car boasts equally-competitive fuel efficiency levels at a reduced cost.
At the same time, Honda has also confirmed that it is to move manufacturing of its Jazz family car to Swindon, news likely to be welcomed by the local workforce.
