Ford takes next step towards fully-electric van fleet

4th March 2009

Ford has unveiled its next step towards rolling out a fleet of fully electric vans, with the manufacturer having teamed up with an American specialist for its latest model.

Unveiled at this week's Geneva Motor Show, the Ford Torneo Connect BEV (battery electric vehicle) Concept has been hailed as an eco-friendly compromise between a company van and a passenger car.

Alongside a battery capable of projecting a range of 100 miles and a top speed of 70 mph, the concept vehicle also has the capacity to be transformed to suit a variety of purposes.

"Although conceptual for now, if there is sufficient interest, this silent, zero emission technology could be applied to the Tourneo Connect quite quickly," explained John Fleming, chairman of Ford's European operations.

"We think it would be an ideal solution for taxi use, as a hotel shuttle vehicle or similar inner city application."

In addition to allowing business and private users to cut back on the amount they spend on fuel, the emerging generation of electric vehicles is also set to offer motorists cheap car insurance, industry experts widely believe.
