Family arguments fuelled by car journeys

29th December 2008

Family arguments are likely to start in a car as it is one of the few times when everyone is together in one place.

That is according to a survey conducted by the Environmental Transport Association (ETA), which revealed that 30 per cent of young drivers felt that rows in cars were as likely as those that take place at Christmas.

Some twenty per cent of the drivers questioned admitted that an argument had got so heated that a passenger had requested to get out of the vehicle.

Andrew Davis, director of the ETA, explained that families are spending an increasing amount of time in cars, but he warned that "rows on the road can make driving inefficient, erratic or just plain dangerous".

Advice issued by the ETA to diffuse tension while driving includes treating "fellow drivers as people", slowing down and relaxing as this also "reduces emissions and saves on fuel costs".

Another way to avoid family disputes while travelling would be to invest in a motorcycle. This may also cut costs as bike insurance can be cheaper than car insurance.

The ETA recently noted that employing green driving techniques could reduce fuel costs by as much as 20 per cent.ADNFCR-1602-ID-18948772-ADNFCR
