Driver develops real phobia of speed cameras

3rd March 2009

While few British drivers would admit to being a fan of speed cameras, with many fearful to seeing their car insurance premiums rise if they are caught going over the limit, one motorist has had to seek help after he developed a phobia of the crime-fighting technology.

Financial services manager Colin Grant has revealed that he developed his deep-seated fear of roadside speed cameras four years ago, though he cannot understand what might have triggered it.

"I just found myself constantly thinking about speed cameras and trying to anticipate where the next one would be," the 41-year-old told the Daily Mail.

"Every time I drove past one, I started worrying about what would happen if I was caught speeding and whether I would lose my job and how it would affect my family."

After owing up to his fear, Mr Grant enjoyed a two-hour meeting with the Norfolk Safety Camera Partnership and has now realised the 'irrationality' of his phobia.

However, the number of drivers with a fear of mobile speed cameras could be set to rise significantly after the government announced plans to give traffic police greater powers, with even minor offences likely to lead to drivers getting three points on their licence and losing out on cheap car insurance policies.
