Severn crossing toll hike causes outrage

Van insurance customers are being held to ransom by the Severn River Crossing (SRC) after the company announced it would be increasing the toll by 90 pence to £18.10, according to the Freight Transport Association (FTA).

The FTA has suggested amending the current contract so that the level of tolls is reduced, but to levy them over a longer period of time, as this would still gain the same amount of income without placing a burden on the industry.

Policy manager for Wales for the FTA Ian Gallagher said the haulage industry is currently at the mercy of "cynical charges" being put in place by the SRC.

"What this situation highlights is the need for private sector infrastructure projects in the future to more carefully consider the contractual terms so that those affected are not held to ransom," he added.

Earlier this month, the Confederation of British Industry suggested that the creation of a toll road to be used by van insurance customers on the A14 could help boost the economy.
