Motorists 'wasting money on short journeys'

Motorists with car or commercial van insurance have been advised to consider cutting back on making short journeys as it could be wasting them money.

Research carried out by Santander Credit Cards found that around a third of motorists take a weekly car journeys of less than half a mile.

With many of these trips taking just one minute to drive, it is estimated that drivers are wasting more than £1.1 million every week in fuel costs.

In addition, 35 per cent of drivers who undertake such short journeys have expressed their embarrassment of getting in the car to travel such as distance.

Callum Gibson, managing director at Santander Cards, commented: "Despite soaring fuel costs, many motorists still give in to the temptation of using the car to make journeys that only take ten to 15 minutes by foot."

Some drivers may be planning to cut back to save money, with a recent study by Gocompare.com finding that over the past two years there has been a substantial rise in the number of people looking for cheaper insurance.
