Freight charging will benefit van insurance customers

Freight charging in the UK will benefit British businesses and the move by the coalition government to charge foreign hauliers to use the country's roads has been welcomed by the Road Haulage Association (RHA).

The move is likely to ease congestion, improving journey times for van insurance policyholders.

"This scheme is good news for UK transport operators and should be welcomed also by motorists, many of whom have complained that foreign hauliers pay nothing for using our roads," the RHA's head of communications Kate Gibbs claimed.

She added that the RHA has been in close consultation with ministers to develop the new framework for road charging and the organisation hopes that with a bit of commitment the new rules could be brought  into effect by the spring of 2014 - the original deadline set out by parliament.

The Department for Transport has claimed that the new deal would be fair and will help UK businesses maintain their competitiveness as foreign hauliers pay for the 1.5 million trips they make on UK roads each year.
